Medic backpacks
Medic backpacks are a vital resource for field medics, offering immediate care to injured soldiers and civilians. Each kit is designed to treat up to 10 people, depending on the nature of the injuries.
Backpack contents depend on specifics of each medic's deployment area and their training. Cost of a single kit varies between $750 (basic kit, treats up to 10 people) and $1,500 (enables more comprehensive care).
We supply 300 such backpacks a month on average.
Leleka assembles each medic backpack in Ukraine, adhering to the rigorous standards of US Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC). Our kits are made from over 40 components sourced from the USA, Europe, and Ukraine, ensuring both high quality and tailoring to specific requests. All components of our medic backpacks are carefully chosen and tested in the field. We distribute these backpacks to verified medics who have received proper training and are actively serving in the field.
Thanks to our long-standing relationships with a network of trusted suppliers across the US and Europe, along with well-establish logistics, we ensure that critical supplies reach the front lines fast - typically within 2 to 3 weeks from order to delivery to field medics. We source components in bulk, directly from manufacturers or large distributors. This approach gives us flexibility of sourcing components from various countries based on price and availability, ensuring both cost-effectiveness and speed of delivery.
Our team on the ground communicates directly with front-line medics, so we always know which supplies are needed most and where. We validate each request to ensure help is directed to the hottest spots first.
Since February 2022, we have delivered over 10,000 medic backpacks to the front lines, providing vital support where it's needed most.
Other tactical first aid supplies
Besides medic backpacks, Leleka aims to provide frontline medics in Ukraine with all other necessary life-saving supplies and equipment.
Combat tourniquets. Severe hemorrhage is a leading cause of death in the battlefield, thus tourniquet becomes one of the most important combat first-aid devices. Each medic needs to carry over a dozen tourniquets on them at all times to swiftly attend to bleeding soldiers. Tourniquets are single-use supplies therefore Ukrainian combat medics require regular top-ups due to a large number of casualties. At Leleka, we procure and supply only original high-quality TCCC-approved combat tourniquets (CAT, SAM XT, SOFT-T, TMT), as well as Ukrainian Sich tourniquets thoroughly tested over the past decade.
Chest seals. Chest seals are occlusive dressings mainly used to treat chest injuries. A puncture wound in one's chest causes air build up ("tension pneumothorax") which can cause a lung collapse. A chest seal closes the wound to let the patient breath. They are easy to use and can also help cover abdominal and neck punctures. Like tourniquets, chest seals are single-use, therefore field medics require regular top-ups. We purchase high-quality US-produced chest seals from large distributors to ensure quality.
Evacuation litters. A lightweight and dependable evacuation litter is among the most essential equipment in field medicine. We equip Ukrainian frontline medics with a range of high-quality evacuation litters, each designed for optimal portability and ease of use in combat zones, depending on situation.
-
Foldable lightweight litters (Talon II, Raven, T3 and similar): These litters are made of strong, military-grade materials, are compact and easy to carry (backpack size when folded), yet capable of supporting significant weight. These litters are used for traditional two/four man evacuation.
-
Flexible plastic litters: Since field medics in Ukraine often lack time and resources for traditional evacuation, flexible plastic litters are among the most requested items. Such litters are made of durable plastic and allow one-man evacuation by dragging the casualty through the most difficult terrains. We mostly purchase these stretchers from Ukrainian producers.
Self-heating blankets. Winter conditions in Eastern Ukraine are harsh, making rescue blankets critical for casualty care. During winter months, we provide field medics with Ready Heat self-heating emergency blankets in addition to regular mylar blankets. Such blankets are full-body size, can heat up to 40°C and maintain the heat for up to 8 hours. In winter, they are wrapped around a wounded person waiting for evacuation and transfer to a hospital, helping fight hypothermia and providing heat much needed for the body to prevent excessive bleeding and reduce overall stress. Cases of wounded people with normal body temperatures are twice less lethal than those with similar injuries and hypothermia.
Advanced equipment. We strive to supply additional equipment on top of core backpack components to the field medics who are properly trained to use it. That includes: junctional tourniquets to control hemorrhage in the groin and armpit areas; intraosseous devices to establish vascular access when IV treatment is not possible; I-gel supraglotic airways for airway management; pelvic slings and much more.
